It’s barbecue season!
In keeping with a strong 24-year barbecue tradition the annual BBQ Challenge is taking place in Frisco, CO. The event kicks off today with a concert, but no barbecue in sight. Officially the two-day bash (Friday, June 16th and Saturday, June 17th) will feature delicious grub, live music from seven bands, kid’s activities, the 3rd Annual Fire Fighter Cook Off, whiskey tours and a marketplace offering a slew of fun products.
For 2017 Challenge, approximately 70 plus BBQers will compete for a variety of awards in the following categories including pork, ribs, chicken, brisket, “anything goes,” barbeque sauce, side dish, salsa and, of course, dessert. Each team competes for the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion titles.
Hogback tickets are the official currency of the BBQ Challenge and they cost a dollar each. There are no cash vendors on the street and Hogbacks are good for everything from beer to BBQ to berry kabobs. They can also be used after the event at merchants in Frisco throughout the weekend. A list of merchants accepting hogbacks will be available at ticket booths and at the Visitor Information Center. Most food on the street costs between 5 and 12 hogbacks. Food choices vary from from salmon and shrimp to ribs and Philly cheese steaks. Many vendors offer full plates including sides.
The famous local event first started back in 1993 with only 12 teams, split 50-50 between Frisco-area professional chefs and amateur cooks. Over the past 20 years the Town of Frisco has partnered with six non-profits to put on the event and has raised over $800,000 for those organizations. The BBQ Challenge creates an outlet for other local non-profits to raise funds for their organization.
