    ORIGIN OF THE WORD, "CIMARRON"

    First recorded in 1840–50; from Colonial Spanish (carnero) cimarrón “wild (ram),” Spanish: “wild,” probably similar to Old Spanish cimarra “brushwood, thicket,” from cim(a) “peak, summit” (from Latin cyĚ„ma “spring shoots of a vegetable,” from Greek; see cyme) + -arrón adjective suffix; cf. maroon
    The southern route of the Sante Fe Trail, the Cimarron Cutoff, passes through the very southeastern corner of Colorado, passing from southwestern Kansas through the Oklahoma Panhandle and into New Mexico. This route proved risky, however, because there were long stretches of dry country between water sources. The Spanish called it “Dead Man’s Journey.”
