Breckenridge Fun Facts: In the 1880's the the mining town of Preston became its own. The town was launched by Mr. John Shock and it sat on Gibson Hill. John Shock managed the Preston boarding house which was neighbored by a dressmaking store and a rare vegetable and fruit shop. The town boarding houses provided the miners with warm, home made meals which was a nice cut above the typical meal of tinned fruit, beans, tea and hardtack. Two of the miners' favorite meals were hot oyster soup and fried oysters. A favorite Oyster Soup recipe consisted of one pint of oysters, 1 quart of sweet milk, 1/3 cup of butter. The milk was heated to a boil, the oysters were added and it was cooked. Next, the juice was added, the soup was set to a boil and serves nice and hot. A loved Fried Oyster recipe required the oysters to be drained, and then rolled into a beaten egg and finished rolling in fine cracker crumbs. The oysters were then fried in deep fat, nice and hot. Rest for five minutes and then served. In 1909, Breckenridge celebrated it's 50th year with booming progress. This is when the beautiful brick courthouse was built and the launch of the Reiling dredge which signaled a shift to the new time of dredge gold dominance. These gold gobbling boats changed everyday lives and jobs with their effective way of placer mining. The boats tripeled the town's mining performance and made 1909 a booming mining year. The success and wealth was celebrated until the historic World War One. While looking across the Blue Valley to Shock Hill, the tailings from the Iron Mask Mine may be sighted. This mine was a large producer of lead-silver ore. It garnered $50,000 before 1909. William Iliff and George Bressler discovered Shock Hill's Blue Danube Mine. On the west side of the hill, were a twenty stamp mill and Brooks Snider workings. North of the Blue Danube was the Ohio Mine, discovered by Daniel Shock and Judge A. L. Shock. Summit County's second boom began when Ilif struck gold at his Blue Danube Mine on Breckenridge's Shock Hill.
