At the beginning of each year, Breckenridge hosts the annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships. Artists come from all over the world to create works of art from blank canvases of snow. The artist carve twenty-ton, 12 foot tall blocks of snow into creative pieces of art. In the past, snow sculpting teams have come from Mexico, Switzerland, Canada, Alaska and the Czech Republic, as well as U.S. cities. There are four people to a team and typically, there are around 15 teams. Only hand tools are permitted, no power tools or colorants may be used. Examples of tools which are used include carrot scrapers, saws, chicken wire and more.
At the end of the event, a panel of judges makes awards for the top 4 teams on the premise of theme, style and technique. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners receive medallions and ribbons. Ribbons are also awarded to the Kids' Choice, Artists' Choice and Peoples' Choice winners.
The event is held next to the Riverwalk Center, in the center of town. There are also a few exhibition sculptures on display at the Blue River Plaza. There is no fee to view the sculptures.
